Should you Focus on your Now, your Past or your Future?
For years organisations have obsessed on like for like figures. Comparing last December to this one and so on. Their other biggest focus is the future. Where are we going? What are my sales forecasts? What’s our vision?
What about now? Is this a worthy exercise and use of people’s precious time?
Let us consider Gestalt. According to The Gestalt Centre, “Gestalt practitioners help people to focus on their immediate thoughts, feelings and behaviour and to better understand the way they relate to others. This increased awareness can help people to find a new perspective, see the bigger picture and start to effect changes.”
Perhaps In the current climate, there is more value in looking at your life right now. What is happening for you today, as you read?
If we seek less to look ahead or behind, and choose to deal directly with the now, this deeper understanding of the present brings about change or very often reduces the resistance to change.
Focus on your now and you are more likely to connect to your immediate thoughts, how you are feeling and what you need in your work and life.
The challenge to all coaches, managers and leaders is to focus on raising each individual’s awareness of what they are doing at this time, and how it is affecting them.
